Universe Rejoice! Star Wars to be Released in 3D

Star Wars fans everywhere can celebrate! George Lucas was so inspired by the hit blockbusters Avatar and Alice in Wonderland that he decided it was time to convert one of the greatest theatrical series of all time over to 3D.  "I haven't been a big fan of 3D, but that movie [Avatar] definitely improves [the field]," Lucas told Access Hollywood.  The announcement of a release date for the first film excited species from across the galaxy. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, is due to hit theatres on February 10th, 2011.

Plans are set to release one film in the series a year over the next six years, with the final instalment, Return of the Jedi, to hit screens in 2017.  Lucas explained that they have been looking to convert the science fiction films over to 3D for years, however the technology has thus far failed to impress them and they have opted not to mess with the integrity of the brand in order to play with theatre tricks.  Apparently 3D technology is now up to standards and Lucas seems incredibly excited to see his films come to life in a new dimension.

Film trailers are sure to be great as many scenes from the film promise to adapt perfectly to 3D cinema, such as the explosion of the Death Star and the races on Tatooine.  The original announcement of the conversion was made in early 2010 with production rights going to Industrial Light and Magic, but with the disclaimer that it would take a while to release the films, "it takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results," said ILM's John Knoll last year.  A long time indeed as the release of the last film scheduled for 2017 will be approximately forty years after the release of the original Star Wars in 1977.

There are a host of other 3D films slated to be released in early 2010, such as Titanic, Ice Age: Continental Drift, and Men In Black III, but none of them have as much promise to light up film news outlets as the Star Wars release.  The brand is notorious for having an incredibly loyal following who can see no wrong in the world of Luke and Anakin Skywalker.  If nothing else, Lucas is being sure to milk as much cash out of his box-office hits as possible.

About the Author

(Star wars)Is anyone else getting tired of Lucas messing with the original 4,5,6?

The biggest problem I have was switching Vader's ghost. There are a lot of unnecessary stuff as well.

Like going back changing his eye brow's with CGI to make him look more like a Anakin from episode 3.

I don't have a problem with him cleaning the films up so the quality is better but he needs to stop messing with scenes.

That wasn't the reason they did the "eye brows" ... in the SE versions they were there but when they thought about it for a minute they realized that, with as badly burned as Anakin had been burned he wouldn't have had eye brows that regrew ... so just a little "opps" with what they did in the SE versions that was "fixed" in the DVD versions.

As a true "old school" fan much of the stuff that was added was ok ... some, like the new scene in ep V that has Vader and Palpatine talking about Luke, were absolutely great and made the story fit together better with what is known. Of all the changes the one you mention, the "Ghost Switch", IS one that was asinine and actually WRONG. The explanation given by "markwillstar" is only a pale summary of what Lucas said ... as usual.

Lucas said that it was done to "connect" the two trilogies with a familiar face ... very poor reason and one that most fans don't except ... the other thing Lucas said was outright WRONG. He said that a Jedi's "Force Ghost" is that of the image they had of themselves when they died and that Anakin died when he became Darth Vader. He really should have checked the info at his website ... starwars.com ... in the bio for Anakin Skywalker it says that he died in the arms of his son on board Death Star II. I don't know of many true fans that will ever except this explanation, myself included.

The other change that just plain sucks is the "Who shot first" between Han & Greedo. Lucas said that he didn't want Han to look like a "cold blooded killer" so in the SE version he made it so Greedo shot first and in the DVD version he made it so they both shot at the same time. This was an example of Lucas trying to be "PC" when it wasn't needed. If someone is holding a gun on you and somehow you get to your weapon and shoot them first ... that's not cold blooded murder ... that's self defense ... at least in my book and that of most fans. Anyways ... do you really think that Han Solo would allow an idiot like Greedo to get the drop on him ... come on George ... that would never happen ... lol ...

In the end I can live with most of the changes and think that some of them were actually a good idea. Lucas has made no more changes to the movies and doesn't plan to ... personally I would love it if he went back and changed those two scenes back to what they originally were ... if he asked fans I think most would agree. Other than that ... yeah ... he should leave them alone now.

May The Force Be With You ...

What made this the hugely successful triumph it was? Was it casting, music, imagination, ingenuity, or luck?

I remember opening day at the theaters. I was old enough to remember every scene, every character, every nuance of this film; having committed it to memory forever, as if I would never again be able to see this beloved, instantly loved masterpiece.

I also remember that the HIT factor of this movie was so unexpected that you had to wait literal MONTHS to get the action figures promised on the cereal boxes. The pieces were still in the manufacturing process and we had to settle for coupons promising our toys in a few months. I wound up seeing this in the theaters a grand total of 36 times; much to my mother's dismay. She loved the movie as I did, but felt I was obsessed. Today, thirty years later, sitting here writing this review, I realize how right she was. I'm still obsessed with this movie, and with the subsequent movies which followed. I wait in great anticipation for Episode 3. I'm a fan, and I don't care what other people say about Episodes 1 & 2. I don't even mind the "prequel" factor, as the situation at the time, dictated to Lucas which movies he would do first.
