Journalism in the movies

For many people, the escapism that the movies provide into someone else's world and life can inspire movie goers to follow in certain characters' footsteps. Die Hard spurred a generation of wannabe policemen, while the Endless Summer roused a throng of surfers chasing the perfect wave. Journalism movies have had a similar effect. The story hunting and investigative excitement of pursuing a groundbreaking or landmark investigation has inspired many young reporters to follow suit. Journalism movies often emphasise the best aspects and functions of its role in society - such as holding those in power accountable and unearthing exploitation or making important cultural commentary.

Here are a few renowned movies about journalism that shed light on the life and role of the journalist.

  • Blood Diamond (2006). This Edward Zwick film is set in the Sierra Leone Civil War and centres on the story of government soldiers and rebel forces clashing over control of diamond production.Danny Archer, a South African diamond smuggler gets caught in the act and journalist Maddy Brown agrees to help him out of Africa if he spills the information she needs to expose the secrets of the blood diamond industry (diamonds acquired through forced labour and slavery). Journalism, therefore, is essential in holding those trading conflict diamonds accountable.
  • Almost famous (2001). This Cameron Crowe film follows a teenage journalist, William Miller, who wants to break into the music journalism industry. He falls into an assignment for Rolling Stone magazine to follow and report on rock band Stillwater. His difficulty in extracting interviews and information from the band members, and his uncensored exposure to the dark side of the music industry highlights the challenges that come with the journalist's profession and the responsibility in accurately documenting a person or event. The film also exposes the difficulties of breaking into the journalism industry.
  • All the President's Men (1976). This film follows the story of two of the world's most renowned journalists - Woodward and Bernstein - and the breaking of the Watergate scandal. The Watergate scandal involved US president Richard Nixon and his illegal tampering and actions during the election process. It started with a Nixon-backed break in to the Democratic National Committee Headquarters and ended with Nixon's resignation. With their anonymous informer nicknamed ‘Deep Throat', Woodward and Bernstein find themselves at the centre of a complicated and sometimes dangerous investigation that ultimately led to the downfall of a President. The Woodward and Bernstein story shows journalism's influence in holding those in power accountable and paved the way for greater US government and political transparency.
  • State of Play (2009). This fast-paced and plot-twisting movie involves two journalists - a traditional reporter for the Washington Post and a blogger - in their relentless pursuit to uncover the conspiracy and truth behind two seemingly unrelated deaths, one of which is a Congressman's assistant. Their efforts expose a corporate cover-up and show the results that persistent and passionate journalism can wield.

If you're a fan of journalism movies and love getting swept up in the drama, emotions and excitement of uncovering and following important stories and breakthroughs, then perhaps you are suited to a career in journalism. Investigate your nearest school of journalism and enrol in a journalism course - you'll be on your way to uncovering the next Woodward and Bernstein scandal!

Don't just watch journalism - do it!

Civil War Journal: The Legacies

Civil War Journal: The Legacies

$20.79

In many arenas the Civil War changed things both in military and civilian life " William C. Davis observes. "The roles in society of women and minorities were altered drastically. Advancements in medicine and technology exerted a profound impact on the future. Industry burgeoned. The reporting of news entered the modern era with the photograph. Culture changed as the complexion of Americans evolved and as war's wounds imposed lasting divisions upon our society. It ensured at once that future wars would be more terrible and yet we would be equipped to cope with that terror to come. These are the legacies of the war covered in this volume." Civil War Journal: The Legacies is the third volume of a three-volume treatment of the Civil War developed from the popular History Channel series Civil War Journal. Drawing on personal letters diaries and newspaper reports these volumes focus on seldom-told stories of people places and events that bring to life the heroic intensity of the Civil War. They portray the human side of the conflict that is frequently overlooked in recounting troop movements and engagements.

Journaling on the Silver Screen

Journaling, by nature, is a solitary exercise. And since we are often concerned with our deepest secret selves in our journals, we rarely share these writings with others. So it's a special treat when we're allowed a peek inside someone else's journal. The cinema is one place where we can occasionally enjoy the journaling lives of others.

Here are a few examples of journal-based films.

1000 Journals

A decade ago, a San Francisco artist decided to conduct a collaborative artwork by releasing 1000 blank journals into the world. He gave a few to friends and acquaintances and then, as word spread, people began contacting him, wanting to take part. He sent journals all over the world. Subsequently, filmmaker Andrea Kreuzhage documented a search for the journals, discovering along the way a world of shared creativity and expression from people around the globe.

Bridget Jones' Diary

Based on a popular novel by Helen Fielding, this film chronicles a year in the life of a woman in her early thirties. Single, self-conscious, and seeking success both in her career and in her love life, Bridget begins her journal on New Year's Day, as a way of making a fresh start in her life. Following the journal, the movie reveals to us the many entertaining fiascos as well as important personal progress its heroine experiences as the year wears on.

Freedom Writers

In this true story, a recent college graduate takes on teaching English to at-risk high school students. Other educators wrote off her students as "unteachable," but Erin Gruwell knew better. She used journaling processes to involve her students not only in English literature but also in recounting their own experiences, especially the hardships and challenges they faced as inner city youth. They read The Diary of Anne Frank, and wrote about their own lives in a war zone, with drugs and violence as daily threats. The students of Room 203 named themselves the Freedom Writers, and published a book entitled The Freedom Writers Diary.

The Motorcycle Diaries

When he was 23 years old, Ernesto Guevara (later known as the Marxist revolutionary, Ché Guevara) kept a journal as he traveled across South America. The journal, which tells of his encounters with poverty and injustice as he crossed the continent, was published after his death and then made into this film.

Eat, Pray, Love

Julia Roberts stars in this recent release based on novelist Elizabeth Gilbert's popular memoir. Still reeling from a painful divorce, Elizabeth goes on a trip of self-discovery to Italy, India, and Indonesia, writing copiously in her journal in each place. She battles her demons of depression, loneliness, and doubt to find her own path to happiness and love. Here's an excerpt, testifying to journaling's amazing transformative properties:  "I fell asleep holding my notebook pressed against my chest, open to this most recent assurance. In the morning when I wake up, I can still smell a faint trace of depression's lingering smoke, but he himself is nowhere to be seen. Somewhere during the night, he got up and left. And his buddy loneliness beat it, too."

Of course, this list is just a sampling. Journal writing can be reflective, like a memoir; or it can be more forward-looking, a place to dream and set goals. Either way, the stories from journals and the stories about journaling can provide fascinating material for movies and other artworks.
