Captain Sullenberger, Preparation, Routine and Opportunities
Hats off to Captain Sullenberger and his crew and their rescue - I can't think of a better word to describe what they did - in saving the passengers and themselves when they had to ditch in the Hudson River. The accolades and gratitude and respect that the crew have received are well earned.
And there is a real lesson for all of us as we go about the business of our lives - every day - some routine days, some difficult days, some boring days, some really special days.
The lesson can be summed up in a quote I read in the book "The Last Stand Of The Tin Can Sailors" by James D. Hornfischer.
"It has been written that so much of life is preparation, so much is routine, and so much is retrospect, that the purest essence of anyone's genius contracts itself into a precious few hours."
The quote refers to the heroism of the small destroyers and destroyer escort ships of the US Navy at the Battle of the Samar Sea in WW II. They turned into the teeth of a large Japanese fleet bent on destroying the carriers they were protecting. Outgunned and outnumbered, the tin can sailors attacked - and all the preparation, routine, habit and response they had accumulated contracted into the collective genius necessary to give the carriers time to escape - but at a very high cost to those sailors and their ships.
Captain Sullenberger and his crew saw all of their preparation, routine and retrospect contract into a brief period of genius that was the product of everything that came before it. Everything I have read about the Captain tells a story of a man constantly striving to be better, to rehearse scenarios, to understand the dynamics of what he spent so much time doing. And when those birds hit, all of that contracted into his - and his crews - particular genius - and lives were saved.
In these times when so much negative is reported, stories of true genius, of competence, of heroism, of people just doing their jobs can help us keep perspective. And realize that our own times of preparation, routine and retrospect can contract into a few hours when an opportunity presents itself that can be life changing.
It's tempting right now - when everything seems mired in negativity - to ask ourselves "what's the use?" Answer that question by remembering and thanking the Captain Sullenberger's and the tin can sailors - draw inspiration from them - and press on.

Captain Chris Pizzo Provides Incredible Self Defense Tactics for Everyone
Captain Chris Pizzo, self proclaimed world leader in self defense and martial arts guru, promises what most of us only dream about – the ability to defend ourselves and our loved ones with only a few simple movements learned after viewing his DVDs.
Owner of Close Combat Training, LLC, Captain Chris certainly looks the part as a photo on his website shows him standing almost defiantly with beefy arms crossed over his broad chest and strong jaw jutting out, almost saying to the bad guys, "Come and get me!"
His philosophy seems simple. Almost too simple. And he has his share of detractors who have tried his system and don't seem to have the enthusiasm that Chris would of course hope for as he strives to bring viable and safe self defense to an entire family unit, not just martial arts enthusiasts.
Although Captain Chris has been accused by some customers of spear-heading a close combat training scam involving sending out and charging customers for unwanted nutritional supplements, this problem was properly addressed and customer concerns were answered. As with any successful business there will always be unhappy customers. However, to stay successful, companies need to do exactly what Chris did – listen and respond! This close combat training scam publicity has only strengthened his resolve to keep his customers happy.
Chris decided in 1997 that the entire self defense industry needed a major overhaul, and he was just the guy to do it. As he suffered from cancer and the associated chemo treatments, he and his wife were simply driving along one day and he was accosted by knife wielding thugs who tried to high jack his car. He used all his strength to fend off these thugs and if it hadn't been for a major stroke of luck as a police cruiser rounded the corner to find him and his helpless wife ready to be stabbed to death at any moment as they lay in the street, Chris and his wife may have lost their lives.
He then focused his energies on researching every form of martial arts and hand to hand combat training known to man. He used science, he used logic, and he used history to help put together a new philosophy based on the fact that martial arts experts are only able to compete successfully simply because they know they are not in mortal danger! Even though they are in a hand to hand combat situation, they are well aware that they are not really being threatened.
Take these same experts and put them in a real combat situation and they most likely will freeze! They now realize they are indeed in mortal danger and apparently all their training at that point of fight or flight, is no help. Captain Chris' research suggests that our bodies are hindered by what our brain is doing…focusing on survival. Our brains are programming us to use our arms and legs to move in certain limited ways to get us out of the situation.
For most of us, this means using our legs to run. With Chris' hand to hand combat system, these muscles are turned into life saving devices which, when used properly, will overcome any assailant unlucky enough to target you or a family member!
