Circe (Comics) $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Circe is a fictional character, a villainous sorceress and a major adversary of Wonder Woman appearing in DC Comics publications and related media. Based upon the Greek mythological character of the same name who imprisoned Odysseus in Homers Odyssey, the comic book incarnation of Circe first appeared to bedevil Wonder Woman in the 1940s in Wonder Woman, vol. 1, issue #37. As the narrative continuity of the Wonder Woman comic has been adjusted by different writers throughout the years, various versions of Circe, with various physical appearances, have emerged to challenge the Amazing Amazon. All of these have retained a set of key features: immortality, stunning physical beauty, a powerful command over wicked sorcery, a penchant for turning human beings into animals (like her mythological antecedent), and a delight in humiliation. It was written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Adrian Alphona. Pride Joy has subsequently won several comics awards, including the 2006 Harvey Award for Best Continuing or Limited Series. Although the Tsunami imprint was unsuccessful, Pride Joy (and the series Runaways that continued it) was one of the very few Tsunami series to do well in sales and to continue being published. Hellfire Club (Comics) $108.33 The Hellfire Club is a fictional society within the Marvel Comics Universe that often comes into confrontation with the mutant superhero team, the XMen. Although the Club appears to merely be an international social club for wealthy elites, its clandestine Inner Circle seeks to influence world events to their own agenda. Created by the Uncanny XMen writer/artist duo of Chris Claremont and John Byrne, they were heavily influenced by a 1966 episode of the British television series The Avengers ( A Touch of Brimstone ). The name Hellfire Club in fact has a historical precedent, having been a popular name for gentlemens clubs in the 1700s. The Hellfire Club as such adheres to an 18th century dress code. Additionally, the hierarchy of the Inner Circle is modeled on the pieces of a chess set, with Black and White sets of Kings, Queens, Bishops and Rooks. The Hellfire Club and its Inner Circle were introduced in the Dark Phoenix Saga, attempting to subvert the XMens Jean Grey. This incarnation, composed most notably of Black King Sebastian Shaw and White Queen Emma Frost, would remain prominent for many years.
