Busting the Myth of Self Optimization

In today's recession, everyone wants to cut corners and expenses. It's understandable, but one of the most common places that businesses try to cut expense is in their 
Search Engine Optimization
. Especially on the smaller end of the business scale, this often amounts to the business owner trying to do it themselves.

This is a horrendous mistake. It's not as easy as throwing a page together and making sure it still works over a period of time. Your business will never go anywhere like that. There is so much to know in SEO that really, it takes a specialist.

As an analogy, let's say that learning 
Search Engine Optimization
is like reading a book. To start with, you have about a 1000 page book to read just to learn the basics. For the average person with an ample amount of free time on their hands, that would take about a week to read. Most likely, it would take at least 3 weeks of straight reading to get to know the material enough that you could actually use it.

I can tell you, it's not exactly a gripping novel either. It's more like reading about 1000 pages of stereo instructions. Depending on how you deal with this kind of stuff, and how much free time you actually have, it will take you longer. In all likelihood, it will take much longer.

In the meanwhile, advancements in the world of 
Search Engine Optimization
go on. At the rate it usually goes, that's about another 40 pages a day just in reading the news. With the changes in the search engines algorithms, you'll find another 200 pages a month.

In short, unless you have nothing better to do or you're a consummate genius and a speed reader, you will very quickly fall behind the times in SEO. As a business owner, you will, of course, have better things to do than take care of the SEO yourself.

Now, if you have a larger business, having an in house SEO specialist isn't what you want to do, either. If you're planning on cutting expenses in the SEO department, you will be thinking in terms of minimizing on staff. This can seriously cut into the quality of your SEO.

You will probably also be thinking in terms of merging departments, such as merging IT with SEO. If you throw the IT guys into SEO specialization also, they're probably not going to be able to pay enough attention to either job to be truly effective at them.

This is a point where outsourcing is your friend. Plenty of good SEO firms exist that have quality service for reasonable prices. They will be focused strictly on SEO, not juggling other departments, so you can be assured of their quality. You can determine their level of involvement with your SEO so you can more easily scale back on expenses or spend more as needed. It's a sight better than either having an overworked IT staff, or a possibly underworked SEO specialist.

Does more muscle really make the number on the scale go up?

During gym, we all had to take turns stepping on a scale. I saw some chunkier girls step on the scale, that were in the high 150/160 pound range and looked it. (they were pretty flabby) However, when I stepped on the scale I was horrified! It said 162 and I'm only 5'4, but I am nowhere near the size of some of those other girls were that weighed that much. You can visibly see that I am pretty petite, (waist of 28, bust of 34A). My ribs are slightly visible in a bathing suit. My thighs are a bit more muscular due to daily running, and I do weights for my sport. I am just freaking out -- could it be that muscle is making the number on the scale go up?

Wrong!  Oftentimes, it's the complete opposite.  The more cash you have to sink in the beginning, the longer it takes for you to turn a profit.  Franchisors are free to set the prices for their initial franchise fees and are not indicative of a healthy business chain.  You will need to do your own research on market conditions, location and the efficiency of the business model the franchise organization has in place.

• Myth #2: The bigger the franchise, the more likely you are to succeed!

Do not be fooled! While this myth may in fact be true in some instances, most of the time it is false.  Buying into a large franchise chain has its advantages, such as larger scale advertising, sophisticated business plans, more capital to support the brand and group discounts for business equipment that will be needed.  However, the group discounts are often negated by higher royalty fees.  Large franchises also offer little to no flexibility when it comes to setting store hours, how many employees you need to hire, products you must carry, suppliers you must use and pricing for your services.

• Myth #3: I will make lots of money, and it will be so easy!

This myth is really a two headed beast.  You may make lots of money but the facts are that most people do not get rich.  It is also not an easy task.  Buying into a franchise may be slightly easier that starting a business from scratch but it's still starting a business! You can expect to work long hours, 12-15 per business day and you can expect to wait a year or more to see any returns on your investment.  One way to ease the stress of the process is to get help.  Experienced professional franchise lawyers and accountants can help you navigate the dangerous traps that many franchisees fall into, such as very one- sided contracts with franchisors.  Hiring a franchise lawyer can save time, stress and increase your chance of success.
