The categorical imperative is the central philosophical concept in the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant, as well as modern deontological ethics. Introduced in Kants Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, it may be defined as the standard of rationality from which all moral requirements are derived. According to Kant, human beings occupy a special place in creation, and morality can be summed up in one ultimate commandment of reason, or imperative, from which all duties and obligations derive. He defined an imperative as any proposition that declares a certain action (or inaction) to be necessary. A hypothetical imperative compels action in a given circumstance: if I wish to quench my thirst, I must drink something. A categorical imperative, on the other hand, denotes an absolute, unconditional requirement that asserts its authority in all circumstances, both required and justified as an end in itself. It is best known in its first formulation: Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law. Every general manager todayall the way up to the CEOis expected by his or her stakeholders to achieve new breakthroughs in performanceand fast. Those who don't make visible progress toward that goal within the first year or two will likely find themselves looking for another job. It is precisely because of this growing breakthrough imperative that managers today, whether in corporations or nonprofits, need to get off to a fast start. They don't have time for mistakes or for going back and redoing what they should have done right in the first place. But, despite the intensity of these pressures, despite the high expectations and short time frames, a number of CEOs and general managers turn in truly exceptional results. How do they meet and exceed the breakthrough imperative? To answer this question, consultants and former managers Mark Gottfredson and Steve Schaubert interviewed more than forty CEOs from both industry and the nonprofit sector, conducted an intensive study of what successful managers do rightand what some do wrongand drew on their own combined fifty-plus years of experience at Bain & Company, where their insights have consistently been found in the pages of the Harvard Business Review . Together they came up with the four straightforward principlesdeceptively simple yet remarkably powerfulthat everyone must follow to succeed at achieving breakthrough results: 1. Costs and prices always decline 2. Competitive position determines options 3. Customers and profit pools don't stand still 4. Simplicity gets results Although seemingly simplistic, mastering these four laws means mastering the basics of great managementa foundation on which to build the rest of one's management strategy. Whether you're managing a small work group or a multinational corporation, a single division or an entire nonprofit, The Breakthrough Imperative presents these core laws of business to help you determine where you are, just how far you can go, and how to get there with stellar results.

Using Space to Save Earth Veteran science journalist William E Burrows offers a bold new mission for the U.S. space program: to protect the Earth from the ever-growing number of perils that threaten our way of life - and even our very survival. We are living through one of the most dangerous times in human history. Nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons technology are proliferating, and missile technology is falling into more and more hands. Extreme natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, fires, and earthquakes, are becoming increasingly costly - not only in dollars, but in lives - as population expands. Environmental crises threaten to provoke massive famines and widespread social collapse. Asteroids the size of battleships streak within striking distance of the earth every year. One strategy offers the best hope of protecting us from all of these dangers - a revitalized national space program that coordinates efforts in global defense, in environmental protection, in communications, and in military security. The Survival Imperative offers an impassioned argument for this bold initiative. To demonstrate the urgency of his cause, Burrows presents a vivid scenario: an impact by a moderately large asteroid that triggers a series of nuclear exchanges, environmental devastation, and the slow disintegration of civilization. And he examines the existing space program from the heady days of the Moon landing through the political compromises that have characterized the history of NASA in the 35 years following our retreat from the Moon. Most of all, Burrows warns that the primary obstacle to achieving a true planetary defense program is not financial or scientific, but social-an unwillingness to acknowledge the urgency of the crisis, and to take the political risks needed to address it. The question, says Burrows, is not whether we can do it, but whether we will act before it's too late.

The Imperative of Integration

More than forty years have passed since Congress in response to the Civil Rights Movement enacted sweeping antidiscrimination laws in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Fair Housing Act of 1968. As a signal achievement of that legacy in 2008 Americans elected their first African American president. Some would argue that we have finally arrived at a postracial America but The Imperative of Integration indicates otherwise. Elizabeth Anderson demonstrates that despite progress toward racial equality African Americans remain disadvantaged on virtually all measures of well-being. Segregation remains a key cause of these problems and Anderson skillfully shows why racial integration is needed to address these issues. Weaving together extensive social science findings--in economics sociology and psychology--with political theory this book provides a compelling argument for reviving the ideal of racial integration to overcome injustice and inequality and to build a better democracy. Considering the effects of segregation and integration across multiple social arenas Anderson exposes the deficiencies of racial views on both the right and the left. She reveals the limitations of conservative explanations for black disadvantage in terms of cultural pathology within the black community and explains why color blindness is morally misguided. Multicultural celebrations of group differences are also not enough to solve our racial problems. Anderson provides a distinctive rationale for affirmative action as a tool for promoting integration and explores how integration can be practiced beyond affirmative action. Offering an expansive model for practicing political philosophy in close collaboration with the social sciences this book is a trenchant examination of how racial integration can lead to a more robust and responsive democracy.
