THE SHIRLEY SHERROD INCIDENT: HOW TO SURVIVE IN THE SHARK TANK
This week, the media jumped on a news story about the woman fired from the U.S. Agriculture Department because of allegedly racist remarks. It was a top news story on all the media outlets and the talking points were simple, straightforward and seemingly irrefutable.
The problem? The story was not really true.
Is this real? It most likely is, but the Shirley Sherrod incident is a reminder that we need to check our facts.
A video posted on YouTube sounded like Sherrod talking to a farmer in a condescending manner and refusing to help him because of his race. But it was actually taped in the 80's and was Sherrod herself giving a talk explaining how to move beyond race.
The edited portions of the conversation were taken out of context. Not only did the woman lose her job through manipulation of the media, but she was publicly humiliated. The farmer in question was actually the one to come forward and make it clear that Sherrod had actually helped him retain his farm and he experienced no racism from her.
Check the facts: It's no secret that the news media today is decimated and running at a fast and furious pace—even legitimate news outlets are now using the likes of TMZ and RadarOnline to source "facts."
Using social media for sourcing can be dangerous, but for many members of the press it's becoming an increasingly routine practice.
For some PR people this may seem like a dream opportunity to shape and direct stories about our clients however we like; however, it is just as likely to turn into a nightmare when facts about our clients are distorted or misunderstood.
As more and more news is reported in real time, this puts an enormous burden upon an industry of professionals already stretched too thin. The downsizing of the traditional media shows no sign of reversing course—and when the media we work with don't have time to fact check, they often accept what is written online or by PR folks as gospel.
We all have clients that on a regular basis are impacted by sloppy or erroneous reporting. Withthe Sherrod incident being an extreme example, more and more we see the media making mistakes that can do real harm.
And with little chance of errors being caught and corrected, it's easier than ever these days for political or competitive rivals to deliberately distort or selectively interpret facts and situations.
Competitors can easily plant false rumors about products and companies on blogs, where mainstream media can source it as fact, based on their own "research." And when the media is just parroting back what PR folks give them or what they find on YouTube, the full picture can often be missed.
What can PR people do? We need to lend a hand. We need to do no harm. There is a reason that the symbiotic relationship of journalists and PR folks has existed for decades. It's not all about spin—it's about telling the story accurately and comprehensively.
Here are some tenets I believe all PR folks should practice to ensure that the story is told accurately and in the right light:
- Be prepared and knowledgeable. You can go above and beyond with the information you provide by doing the fact checking legwork for them. Do your homework, people, and don't waste anyone's time—they simply don't have it anymore.
- Be factual, spin or no spin. Don't ever spread falsehoods or hide information. Now more than ever, PR folks are shaping the stories written in the media and online outlets, and falsehoods will come back to haunt you.
- Give the media professional you are working with as much help as you can. Yes, it might seem like you have become their assistant—and in today's new reality you might just be.
- Follow-up in such a way that you anticipate their needs. Don't just idly ask, "Is there anything I can follow-up on for you?" Listen during interviews. Think like a journalist. What will help this person tell a good and accurate story?
- Make corrections wherever possible for erroneous materials that are posted online about your clients. Do what you can to have information that is not factual amended as soon as it appears—this is not always possible but it is important to address it to the best of your ability.

please help me. let me share my experiences first: i have a bow in my room that was moved from my desk to in front of my tv set by itself, a door that i shut closed opened by itself, i hear banging noises all the time coming from the walls in my house, i feel watched in my pqrents room and their bathroom, the kitchen, the laundry room, my room, my brothers room, my bathroom, and to me the creepiest place to me is the hallway the goes to my room, brothers room, parents room and their bathroom. last night i had heard a staticky noise in my room and my brother heard it too but it might have been coming from my fish tank too. please help me wiyh what i am experiencing and please be supportive to me and i watch shiws about paranormal stuff like ghost adventures so i could be paranoid but i only really feel this way at my house. pleasehel
Stop watching those paranormal shows. After a while your mind starts to think what it wants. For instance, if you think your house is haunted. Soon enough youll be scared into thinking it really is. I'm not saying that those are some strange accounts, but as long as no one gets injured in any way i dont see any harm in it.

Warlocks! Stop Leveling Like A Hunter! Learn The Secret Art Of Drain Tanking And Ding 80 In Days
One mistake that most people make when playing a warlock is playing it just like a hunter. While the characters are similar in that they both have pets, the hunter is focused on single target DPS and killing mobs as fast as possible.
We as warlocks, on the other hands, have very powerful skill sets that will allow us to very, very quickly destroy multiple mobs at once. Welcome to the unknown art of drain tanking!
Now for the first 30 levels, playing a warlock is quite similar to that of a hunter: send pet in to get aggro, fire off some spells and dot's, send pet to new mob, repeat. Once we get the level 30, however, the tables take a real turn and we are offered an amazing new talent Siphon Life. What Siphon Life does is turns your Corruption and Seeds of Corruption DoT's into HoT's for you, meaning the spells kill mobs and heal you at the same time! Here we also get our new pet, the Felhunter.
Now the tables take a gigantic turn. We become the tank while we DoT up our targets. Our Felhunter just becomes another mobile DoT as we aggro mob after mob. We become unstoppable killing machines just from that one talent, siphon life.
Why?
Because as we DoT up more and more targets with our Corruption spells, we get healed more and more. Targets will keep swinging and hitting us, but they won't be able to bring us down because our DoT's are healing us as well as killing the mobs. We have no choice but to keep moving and killing more mobs! Throw in our drain life spell and we never have to worry about health ever again! We can life tap over and over again and our health and mana levels will never fall to critical levels.
One very important thing to take into account here is once you start to role of drain tanker at about level 30, you always, always, always want items with +spell power. Why? Because more spell power means your spells do more damage means that you get healed more. Always take + spell power when you switch to the role of drain tanker.
