Gyro Gearloose is a running back on his high school football team (Gyro's mass is listed in the program at 85 kg). During a game with rival high school Liberty Tech, Gyro, while "dancing" at the line of scrimmage waiting for a hole to open, is tackled by linebacker Tank Jablonski. Tank's mass is listed at 125 kg and Tank was moving at a constant velocity of 13 meters per second for two seconds, prior to making contact with Gyro. Calculate Gyro's acceleration (deceleration) after being tackled
Its a simple equation, if you assume complete transfer of velocity. The total inertial of Tank is 125 X 13 = 1625. Upon hitting Gyro, and assuming no loss of momentum (as there would be in the real world) the mass of the system is now Tank plus Gyro (125 + 85) = 210. The momentum remains the same, but the mass has increased, thus the speed must decrease- the new speed the Tank/Gyro system attains is 1625/210, or 7.7 meters per second. The change in velocity over time (acceleration) requires knowing how plastic the system is-in other words, how much time it took Gyro to go from 0 to 7.7 m/s.
