Rheumatoid Arthritis and Beer – A Strange Relationship
Rheumatoid arthritis is incredibly painful and debilitating. The usual course of treatment involves taking steroids long term, as well as taking pain medication to help you deal with the pain, inflammation and soreness that goes hand in hand with the condition. However, new research from scientists in the UK seems to indicate that beer might be of significant benefit to those who suffer from RA.
What has scientists buzzing (as well as RA sufferers), is a study conducted with almost 2,000 participants. There were 873 people who consumed alcohol and just over 1,000 people who did not. All of these individuals had rheumatoid arthritis. The study found that those who drank more beer, wine or cocktails had less pain, less swelling of the joints and fewer problems than those who didn't drink at all.
Interestingly, the same study found that people who consumed alcohol on a regular basis were far less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis in the first place. That last bit is a real stumper for scientists, who are still unsure how alcohol can protect against RA and provide benefits for sufferers of the condition as well.
Of course, that doesn't give you carte blanche to become a lush in the hopes of preventing RA or treating the symptoms of your arthritis. The heaviest drinkers in the study were those who had just over 10 drinks in a single month, and doctors still suggest having no more than two beers or glasses of wine per day. However, even that small amount might be enough to help keep you from getting RA in the first place, or of alleviating the pain and disability associated with RA if you currently have it.
Of course, if you do have RA, then you need to have some other treatment options. Beer is great, but it's not going to do the job alone. You need to visit your doctor and discuss a treatment plan with him or her, and you need to add exercise to your diet, as well. It seems that more exercise can actually help you beat swelling, pain and disability, even though it causes pain in the short term.
Combined with a healthy diet, a limited intake of alcohol from beer or wine and the right medication, exercise can be a definite factor in helping sufferers reduce their symptoms both now and for the longer term.

strange doctor. what do i do?
my hubby went to a new doctor today for his back. he wants to give him herbal injection, but says he will not bill our insurance, we have to pay cash. as if this is not strange enough, he wants him to sign a power of attorney paper to him! what do i do? i already told him not to go back to him & that there is something wrong with these request, but how do i turn this doctor in? thanks.
Herbal injection is one thing, you didn't mention what's in it, and it may be beneficial. But power of attorney? I agree with you 100%, that's a red flag. Run, don't walk, out of there. Talk with the State Board.

Doctor Glas $10.25 The haunting tale of Doctor Glas takes place in Stockholm during the closing years of the 1800s. The doctor, a troubled and compassionate man, relates the strange story of the Reverend Gregorius and his pretty wife. Gregorius, an elderly and offensive pastor, has endangered her physical and mental health. She consults Doctor Glas, who for the first time violates the ethics of his profession and uses a highly unorthodox method of helping her. But when the wife takes a lover, and Doctor Glas becomes emotionally attached to her, an intolerable situation develops. The uxorious pastor dies, poisoned. The aftermath of his death and the doctor's unforeseen reactions to it bring the story to a chilling, horrifying close. Originally published in 1905, Doctor Glas is a novel of extraordinary immediacy and frankness. Its concerns - sexual incompatibility, abortion, euthanasia - together with its psychological insights, make it a remarkably modern work. |

Strange Laws When You Travel
Sometimes when you travel, you may find some strange laws... at least they may seem strange to you, but they are perfectly logical in the country you are traveling to.
And while you may think they're a little funny, if you break some of them, you won't be laughing. You really want to know what these are ahead of time if you can.
While some minor infractions may be overlooked, in some countries, things you don't even think about may result in costly fines... or even get you in serious trouble... might even land you in jail!
Much of the time, we're talking about common sense things here, but you might run into some strange laws that you just never thought about... and not knowing won't help you in some cases!
Go to government websites to check before you go on your trip. Look under "Local Laws and Customs" on the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office website. On the Australian and U.S. government sites, check under "Travel Advisories".
At one time even HAVING chewing gum was illegal in Singapore.... Now tourists can have it, but don't chew it and spit it out on the sidewalk.... They ARE watching, and it could result in a big fine. They're serious about keeping things clean and orderly.... Clean, as in... leaving a public toilet un-flushed could cost you a fine. And orderly, as in ...don't try jay walking either.
Jaywalking is a tricky one anywhere.... If we don't know the customs in a country, we cross at a crosswalk and wait for the light (even with no traffic). It only costs you a few steps and a few seconds.... so much better than big trouble.
When you fly into Dubai, you may purchase duty-free liquor to take into the country, but be careful where you drink it and where you travel. You can take it to your hotel room, or to friends if they have a liquor license, but don't even think about drinking it on the beach.
Drug laws are very strict in the Emirates too.... you even need to be careful of medications. Some prescription drugs and even some over-the-counter drugs are considered narcotics. Carry your doctor's prescription and leave the drugs in their original container... especially if they contain codeine.
In most Muslim countries, men and women shouldn't hold hands when they walk around in public. And whatever you do... leave the magazines with sexy pictures at home.
In Thailand, criticizing the King is illegal.... and for heavens sake, don't drop any money and inadvertently step on it.... It has a likeness of the King! It's also illegal to drive shirtless, so guys, while this may seem like a strange law, if you rent a scooter at the beach, keep your shirt on.
We all know you are not supposed to leave your baggage unattended in the airport.... but in the UK it is illegal.
Don't hang out with shady characters in Morocco... if you are with someone who possesses narcotics, even if you're unaware of it, you can be tried for possession.
In Mexico it is illegal to shout offensive words in any public place.
In many countries, it is illegal to take pictures of police officers, military officers, and military installations. Always ask or check on that one.
In Australia, you can get a ticket for leaving your keys in an unattended car... OK... that strange law falls in the why-would-you category, but in Germany, it is illegal to run out of gas on the autobahn. Not only that... it's illegal to walk along the autobahn.... so be sure your tank is filled up!
Reading up on strange laws before you travel might not just give you a giggle... it could save you money... or keep you out of jail!
