Website Design | Graphic Design - Why you must pay for these services

OK, youre probably reading this blog because you have found me on Google. You've done your homework and research and you have called a couple of companies and got a few quotes and now you are speaking to me. So many peoples first question to me will be ‘ do you have any graphic design or web design packages ‘ ? I will tell them no we do not operate like this and I can hear the frustration in their voice as they have rung 10 other web companies who all offer some sort of package. Thorough and proper web design should not be bundled up and sold like a cheap holiday package to Bali or the snow. Websites need to be properly briefed in and the project needs to be scoped out. Marketing advice and website usability needs to be incorporated , competition analysed and target market identified before any design can begin. All of these factors are critical and are overlooked by the mass of web companies ( I call them back yard operators) who tout their $395 for a full web design package OR even worse offer you a range to choose from. These guys are out for the quick buck, a churn and burn, production line mentality that will take your money and run. You will be treated like a number, not as a valued client, never have calls returned and be totally dissatisfied with the end product: a web template.

I cannot emphasise this enough before you choose graphic designers or a  web design company to work with you PLEASE have a very close look at their portfolio of work and ask your self this:

1) do all the sites look the same – then how are they going to treat my site and how will it stand out from my competitors. Just another boring website

2) are they using cheesy stock photo library images – this has been done to death and is a deal breaker when it comes to web design – obviously no thought has been put into the design

3) is the company using an actor for its video – yes, I have seen this, can you believe that a web company will use a paid actor to sell its services and then use the same actor on other web companies. This is insanity and goes to show you how unimaginative some companies are.

4) do the companies website look drab and too sales focused , with tacky, overkill headings. These guys are the lower end of the market so dont expect any hi-end design or marketing input with these people. A slick 5 minute phone sales pitch and a signed document will seal your fate and commit you to a horrific web experience.

5) Does the company have a physical office and can they be contacted – if they have a 1800 number and just an email enquiry form FORGET IT! – these guys are probably working a second job and doing this on the side.

So hopefully all this makes sense and will help you in deciding what web company to use when embarking on what is a very important decision: a website for your business.

Is there a place online that will sell and stock t-shirts of my own design for me?

Basically, I want to be able to have some personalized t-shirts (or even other items. Mugs, keychains, etc) for sale, but I don't want to stock them, or sell them, or ship them. Just a t-shirt with a simple logo.

here you go.. I believe that they will do the thing that you need.

Stock or Custom Icons?

When designing a web site or an application's interface, one of the hardest tasks is designing the icons. The overall look and feel of an interface often hinges on the quality of the icons used. In most situations creating a professional looking interface requires the use of professionally designed icons.

The two main types of professionally designed icons currently available are stock icons and custom designed icons. The following information should prove useful when choosing which type of icon to use.

Stock Icons

Stock icons are collections of generic icons that are designed to cover the most common functions that an application or web site might require (for example loading, saving, printing or searching). They are widely available on the web and can be downloaded directly from icon seller sites. Some stock icon packs are entirely free but these tend to include only a single size of each icon and often have restrictive license agreements.

Strengths

  • Inexpensive – Stock icons are comparatively cheap or even free.

  • Quick – Stock icons can be downloaded and incorporated within an application or website within minutes.

  • Choice – There are a large number of websites dedicated to stock icons and these provide a huge variety of icon sets that can be selected for download.

Weaknesses

  • Not unique – Stock icons are available for anyone to purchase so there will be other applications and websites around utilising the exact same icons.

  • Not specific – In some cases a very specific function needs to be represented that may not be covered in a generic stock icon set.

  • No branding – Stock icons will not incorporate any kind of branding that could be required in some instances

  • Not audience specific – Different audiences will comprehend icons in different ways, stock icons are generic and therefore not tailored to any specific audience.

Custom Icons

Custom icons are designed from scratch to fit a client's specific requirements. The design process used to create custom icons varies but generally the following steps are involved:

  • Research – Finding out about the client's requirements and deciding on what concepts and metaphors are to be used.

  • Sketching concepts – Using pencil and paper to sketch a number of concept designs.

  • Optimising concepts – After choosing the best concept sketches, these are optimised to produce the final designs.

  • Render final design – The optimised concept is rendered, either as a vector or a bitmap, depending on the users requirements and the designer's preference.

Strengths

  • Uniqueness – Custom icons are designed and created for a single client and will therefore be unique to their website or application.

  • Client input – The design process used to create a custom icon allows a client to have input into the design of an icon, ensuring it meets their specific needs as optimally as possible.

  • Branding – Custom designed icons can be created to fit within a visual identity and incorporate branding.

  • Audience tailoring – The icon's audience can be taken into account when designing a custom icon.

Weaknesses

  • Expensive – Custom designed icons are more expensive than stock icons.

  • Slow – As the icons have to be created from scratch time is required for the design process to be completed.

Using Both Together

In situations where a stock icon set is adequate for all but a couple of functions it can be most efficient to use this stock icon set and have the remaining icons custom designed. Often companies that sell stock icons also provide a custom design service. If a stock icon set is to be used in conjunction with custom icons then it is preferable to purchase them both from the same company to ensure that the visual identity of the stock and custom icons match.
