Why someones find clowns scary?
Watching scary movies, playing scary games, driving on a huge rollercoaster, are some of the things that make people scared and horrified but on other hand, people love this kind of fun. The point is that the thrill of the unknown elevates heart rate and boosts adrenaline, and while doing these scary things, if the person knows that they are not real threat, they can be processed, laughed about and enjoyed. Young children, even if are not totally aware of the origin of this kind of entertainment, mostly find it amusing, but on other hand there are some figures imagined to be entertaining, but still they terrify with their appearance.
One figure of this type is the clown. They are comical performers, stereotypically characterized by the image of the Circus clown, with coloured wigs, strong makeup, unconventional costumes, unusually large footwear, red-nose… They tell jokes, do some silly things that many times require strong physical disposition and many hours of training. Even if they are imagined as a funny figure that make children and grownups smile, a large group of people, young and adults, finds clowns very scary. According to the researches, approximately 20 to 30% of the entire population find clowns intimidating.
In psychology this type of fear is known as Coulrophobia and it can result with panic attacks, anxiety and similar phobic reactions.
There are a number of theories why a number of people find clowns scary. Experts say that is connected with some childhood trauma. They underline that first contact with circus can be pretty annoying for a child. There is a sensory overloading with unusual sights, sounds and smells so a child can easily become overwhelmed by the surreality of all that.
Also there is a concept about the role that clowns play in society. Children are taught that they have the right to behave as children and adults have the responsibility to act like adults. In this case there is a conflict because clowns are encouraged to become adults acting like children. Also here is the fear from molestation by a masked or disguised attacker. Feeling humiliated or ridiculed in public can be a very traumatic experience for some people, even if it's done in the name of comedy.
Another reason could be the fact that clowns are often portrayed as emotionally unstable or psychotic. They are characterized as emotionally conflicted persons that project a false impression of happiness while hiding great personal pain.
To all this can be added the idea of a "killer clown", used in horror films and novels many times. Probably the photos of the serial killer John Wayne Gacy, dressed as a clown, that have been published numerous times, also took part in marking of the clowns as a scary figures.

Is it weird to wear gloves when reading comic books?
The reason I wear the gloves when handling my comics is to prevent getting fingerprints on them. I want to keep them in mint condition. I dont think this is weird but my friends and family say im crazy. Do other people do this?
@Christina and you are a stupid, rude blonde, obviously.
@Bernard @Ramona Exactly!
Handling comics that you want to keep mint should always be done with gloves so that the oil and dirt on you hands don't come in contact with the pages. However, if you want it to be mint you shouldn't be reading it at all. Buy 2 copies, store 1 away and read the other.

Paranormal Activity 2: the best ranking debut for a horror film
There is a belief that circulates around people that nothing could scare us any more. We have seen so many frightening things on TV, in real life, in the films, so now there is no thing that could surprise us and make feel shudders. In accord to this belief, scary games are not frightening enough; horror films are more comical than outrageous or horrifying, we are prepared by now for the things that could conceivably be seen on TV, our threshold stimulus is much lower then it used to be… Maybe it is like that but the information that the second part of the movie Paranormal Activity earned $63 million in three days, from the first day of its appearance, tells us that there are yet some things that could make us frightened or the director of this movie has made something unseen and untold before so he got all the benefits. This movie is showing in only few countries outside of North America, - the United Kingdom, Australia, Mexico and Russia, and it will be released in over 30 countries in the next two weeks. Paranormal Activity 2 has the best ranking first public appearance for a horror film, taking away the authority from last year's Friday the 13th.
The first part of this starless movie appeared last year. The independent movie was shot with budget smaller than $15,000 but earned about $108 million at the U.S. box office and $194 million around the world and soon Paramount pictures buy it for dealing from its independent producers.
Paranormal Activity is about young pair haunted by a supernatural appearance in their house. Maybe isn't something new but the captivating thing is that the movie is made in the style of "found footage" - way of making film in which the whole movie or a part of it is presented as an rewrite of recovered footage, often left behind by protagonists that are death or missing. Katie and Micah set up a camera, trying to take a picture on what is haunting them, and the movie is made as a documentary - style thriller. All the intimidating elements of the previous part are also in the second part but now the victims are members of the extended family – Katie's sister and her baby are being threatened by the "unseen". The sisters keep in mind the visits of a spirit from their childhood but Kristi's husband could not believe anything about that… In the second part the number of gadgets used to detect the wonder is even bigger.
Critics analyze that the achievement is due to the fact that these films are being scary and creepy but they draw attention to people that usually don't watch horrors. They don't give drastically cruel scenes;" the monster success provided an antidote, a taste of something designed to spook without assault."

Weird Tales of the Ramones (Bonus Dvd) $51.64 Given their irreverent sensibilities, it's almost ironic to lionize the comic deconstruction of ossified rock history that was the Ramones' stock in trade, or note the decades of punk and alt.rock that remain their legacy. Instead, this collection smartly recasts the punk pioneers as literal pulp culture icons via its EC Comics-inspired packaging and the brilliantly executed comic book history of ... |
