Could be as the other posters have said,, I have one question though, does this occur when you try to relight a cold stove? like if you let the fire die away and you have to restart . if that is the case it's because you have to start an updraft, if you don't you'll get smoke out of the unit like you describe, it happens to me if the stove is cold , what I do is put in some kindling or paper & light it, once it creates the updraft you can begin to place wood. a little at first then add to it. Try not to let the stove go completely cold if possible. hope that's the cause? sorry I could not be of more help
